Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stuart, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers established in cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, hair on the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches or body hair is required. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing alternatives.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly favored in drug testing procedures. Many companies, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are conducted by organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary supervision. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, obtained through observed collection, making them difficult to deceive. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair strand fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 90-day detection period for substances. It's easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug screen are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial sample processing into a lab’s workflow. This step entails verifying that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening performs a preliminary review for drugs of abuse presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as appropriate. The end-to-end laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized for both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug screenings can trace drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the reduced detection timeframe of urine screenings.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, offering more than just insight into recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug screens tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing options.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
