Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Swea City, Iowa. If hair or alcohol testing is required, our specialty centers nationwide can facilitate. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffice for testing. Our hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored technique for drug screening, surpassing urine tests in numerous settings such as workplaces, courts, and substance abuse programs. Its key advantages include an extended detection window, providing insight into 90 days of drug history, and the method's resilience against tampering, though urine tests remain more efficient for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair during its growth, hair presents a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use. Collecting samples near the scalp can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for such substances. Hair sample collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. It is advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair alone, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Overview of the Process

The test result processing in a lab encompasses four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning phase, the sample first enters the laboratory system. This entails confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and populating any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a rapid preliminary check for misuse of drugs. It is an efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most samples; however, for court acceptability, positive results require confirmation. Those samples with presumptive positive results during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. This step involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug screening notably challenging to administer.

Positive screening outcomes are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Its resistance to tampering makes the outcomes more reliable.
  • Reveals consumption patterns: It not only indicates recent use but also shows historical drug usage trends.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influenced by factors like individual hair growth rates and color, influencing drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often termed a "hair follicle test", the analysis is on the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Swea City, IA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which often only capture recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader snapshot of an individual's substance history.

The extensive detection window of hair testing makes it possible to identify drug use over months, as opposed to the limited timeframe urine tests offer, ensuring a more holistic approach to drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Swea City, IA, boasts an extended detection period that spans up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of an individual's drug use history. It's a crucial method for employers seeking to understand employees' substance habits comprehensively.

This expansive detection window serves as a significant advantage, providing a retrospective analysis that urine tests cannot match, ensuring that drug screening is both thorough and insightful.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Swea City, IA, dramatically reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, thus guaranteeing trustworthy results. The integrity of the sample remains intact, offering peace of mind to those utilizing the test.

By reducing the risks associated with tampering, hair tests provide conclusive evidence that is difficult to dispute, which is vital in maintaining the credibility of drug screening practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
