In Tabor, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full spectrum of hair follicle drug testing options. When a hair or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing shines, with facilities across cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair, the hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing solutions.

The trend in drug testing sees a growing preference for hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now seek these tests, favored over conventional urine tests. Employers upholding strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers prefer hair testing for its extended detection timeframe, covering up to 90 days. This monitored collection process is virtually tamper-proof, making it a choice beyond comparison, although the urine test remains unrivaled for detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can record a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair shaft fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be lacking, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair solely, whereas body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is remarkably difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: An estimated 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
