Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Traer, Iowa. If you're in need of hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments and offers facilities throughout the country for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle testing has become more popular in drug testing processes recently. Many employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is their longer detection period—up to 90 days. They are collected under observation and are quite hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Through capturing biomarkers in the fiber structure of a growing hair strand, hair reflects a long-standing record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it can offer approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. The collection procedure for hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches involving around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG testing, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s measurement scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is carried out in four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the processing of a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This stage involves validating the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry required that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to stand in legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening must undergo an additional confirmation check.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. Each step in the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can register drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays historical consumption patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just capturing recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect current use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair for detection.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
