Complete hair follicle drug tests are provided by Accredited Drug Testing in Truesdale, Iowa. Specialized in hair testing, our centers span all cities Nationwide, offering hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is necessary; however, body hair can also be used.

The trend toward hair follicle drug tests over urine tests has risen among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts. Ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, hair tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, almost impossible to manipulate, while urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture indicators over time, embedding them within the fibers. When obtained from near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of roughly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg, the perfect quantity for both initial examination and confirmation. For EtG, specialized requests, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount from elsewhere on the body is suitable. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The key stages in analyzing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into the lab's workflow. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills out any extra information not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as an initial, quick drug check. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, positive results need verification for legal admissibility. Samples with a preliminary positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from the hair in significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicated as potentially positive are cleaned prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory protocol from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to evasion: Manipulating hair drug tests is notably difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Chronological data available: It tracks drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual hair growth can alter the presence of drug residues.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," this examination targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
