Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Union, Iowa. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair, Accredited Drug Testing is experienced in this area, with testing locations across the United States prepared to conduct hair analyses. For a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair analyses can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other hair evaluation options.
In recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly leaned towards using hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testings over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation, often utilize hair follicle tests. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days with observation during the sample collection, making it exceptionally hard to tamper with. However, when it comes to detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

Testing hair has evolved into a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a long-lasting record for alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.
A sample of 1.5 inches comprising nearly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for preliminary tests and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If head hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening consists of an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen must be verified to stand in court. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.
Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.
Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
