At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in University Park, Iowa. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair testing provides nationwide centers equipped to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp, or elsewhere on the body, is typically required. Hair analysis can include detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The trend toward using hair follicle drug testing has grown over recent years. Instead of relying solely on urine testing, employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests. This method benefits organizations with strict anti-drug policies and judicial commands, offering a notably extended detection span of up to 90 days, using an observed process that is nearly foolproof. Despite this, traditional urine tests remain the most effective for detecting very recent usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for monitoring drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Hair obtained near the scalp can offer up to a three-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample from a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and affirming results. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. The sample should ideally be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically imply scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is logged into the laboratory system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data logging not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as the initial rapid inspection for the presence of drugs. Although it provides a cost-efficient means of eliminating drug use in most samples, any sample yielding a positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test increases the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: Capable of revealing a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis conducted involves the hair strand and excludes the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
