Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Vail, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such testing, with locations in cities nationwide that can conduct hair tests. It's generally necessary to have between 1.5 and 2 inches of hair on your head or body, and hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, drug testing methods have shifted towards including hair follicle testing more frequently. Hair drug testing is now often required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug use policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals frequently utilize hair drug testing. Its primary advantage is a longer drug detection window, often up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly foolproof compared to urine tests for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a crucial method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When cut close to the head, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent weight of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process involves checking that the specimen was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment to check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective technique for ruling out drug use on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptively positive results during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
