In Vincent, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in both drug and alcohol tests via hair samples, we offer this service nationwide, regardless of your city. For a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is required. Hair analysis is available for a variety of substances, including alcohol/ETG, with customized options available.

Hair follicle drug testing has seen increased use recently, replacing urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. With a zero-tolerance policy, many employers opt for hair tests due to their extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days. Collection is observed, making it difficult to cheat. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a lengthy record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and narcotics. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to manipulation, and convenient to send.

An ideal hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp, amounts to 100mg, perfect for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We propose measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four foundational stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's integration into a laboratory's system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening comprises an initial, swift examination for drugs. Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive screening result demands validation for legal presentation. Samples that show presumptive positivity in screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase removes drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory operation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over a duration, rather than just reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair testing over urine? In Vincent, IA, hair follicle tests surpass when it comes to uncovering prior drug use with higher accuracy and reliability. They record substances ingested over a lengthy timeline, providing a clearer picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
