Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Vining, Iowa. For those requiring a drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body, between 1.5 to 2 inches, is needed. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing preferences.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analyses. This method is now favoured by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are employed by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation services. This test's main advantage is its extended detection range, usually up to 90 days. It involves an observed collection, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting substances consumed within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers a window of detection for drugs and alcohol up to roughly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, reasonably challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced chances of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insight: Presents a usage pattern over time, not restricted to recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Cost concerns: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
