Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Viola, Iowa. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have numerous locations nationwide, ready to perform these tests efficiently. Whether it’s 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or from the body, our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or any tailored hair testing options to suit your needs.

In the last few years, the usage of hair follicle drug tests has gained traction. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer a hair test over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are crucial for enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies at workplaces and for those on probation. Its main advantage is the longer detection window of up to 90 days, with a strict collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an efficient means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures long-term history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 strands near the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing step where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift initial check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen should be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the toughest methodologies to carry out.

Confirmatory testing of positive screens is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed prior to confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to highly reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
