Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Volga, Iowa. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis with nationwide testing facilities ready to conduct your examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. Drug, alcohol/ETG, and other custom tests can be performed with hair samples.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace for drug screening. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests due to their extended detection range, up to 90 days, rigorous collection procedures, and difficulty to bypass. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, offering a longer-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting substances. Hair collection is straightforward, quite challenging to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a total of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the example. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly way to conclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to undertake.

Confirmation of any screening results indicating positivity is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can disclose a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Volga, IA, hair follicle testing provides an edge over traditional urine tests, mainly due to its superior detection timeframe. While urine tests capture recent substance use, hair tests reveal a longer history of consumption, offering a clearer picture. This makes hair testing invaluable for comprehensive assessments of drug use.

Hair tests in Volga excel in detection accuracy and reliability compared to urine tests. The extended detection window means that even sporadic use is likely to be identified, reducing the risk of false negatives. This long-term approach to drug testing helps employers make informed decisions regarding workforce risks.

Extended Detection Window

In Volga, IA, hair follicle testing is renowned for its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This feature sets it apart from other testing methods, such as urine tests, that cover only a brief period. Employers benefit from a thorough insight into a candidate's or employee’s drug history, enhancing decision-making capabilities.

The longevity of the detection period in hair follicle testing means that drug use is trackable over a quarter of a year, which is instrumental for businesses in Volga aiming to maintain a drug-free workplace. This comprehensive view helps deter drug use and supports long-term workforce safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
