Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wahpeton, Iowa. Whether it's for a drug or alcohol check, our centers excel in hair testing available nationwide, ensuring a thorough examination in any city. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary. These tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The prevalence of utilizing hair follicle drug assessments has increased in recent years. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor these over conventional urine tests. They're preferred by firms with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage is that hair follicle tests provide a broader detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in an observed setting, making manipulation virtually impossible. Yet, for drug usage screened within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a lengthy overview of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal usage over a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample appears to be positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and arranged for Extraction. At this point, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive initially are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides a usage pattern: Offers an overview of drug use trends over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
