In Walnut, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require drug or alcohol evaluation via hair sampling, we have vast expertise and numerous facilities across various cities ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. These evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or diverse custom options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle exams. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug analyses over standard urine screenings. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probations widely use them. The key advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, alongside being almost impossible to tamper with, although urine tests are more precise for the most recent five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to three months. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the optimal sample for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other body hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. It offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples; however, a positive result must be verified to be valid legally. Samples indicating presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening will have additional hair extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation for a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation where necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug consumption for up to 90 days, which is longer than the period detected by urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can show a usage pattern over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these actually analyze the hair strand, not the under-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
