Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wellman, Iowa. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of performing these tests. The crown of your head must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, or body hair may be used typically. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use hair follicle tests. A significant advantage of these tests is the longer detection period of drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected through observed methods, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate when detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer almost a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use across most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be valid in legal settings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is executed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to cheating: It's notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, hence the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
