At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wesley, Iowa. Our team specializes in hair drug and alcohol tests, with numerous centers across every city in the nation ready to conduct a hair test. For most cases, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other testing options.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has grown, often replacing the standard urine test for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer these tests due to their efficiency. Hair follicle tests benefit organizations with strict no-drug policies, offering a 90-day detection period, a monitored collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning engages the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming the sample was secured and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples that display a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can offer a timeline of drug consumption over a span of time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
