Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Whiting, Iowa. Should you need a hair alcohol or drug examination, our specialty within hair analysis is supported by facilities across every city nationwide, ready to carry out your test. A hair length between 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, with samples typically taken from the crown or body for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a favored method in drug analysis, surpassing traditional urine tests. Companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer this test for its enhanced reliability. Hair follicle exams are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probationary supervision. The key advantage is its extended detection range, tracking substances up to 90 days through an observed method, reducing cheating risks. However, urine exams are still top for identifying recent drug use, within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair can provide an extended history of substance usage by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to approximately a 3-month window for identifying alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to gauge the sample weight. If scalp hair is scarce, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab system. This step verifies that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug use suspicion for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples that preliminarily test positive in Screening require further confirmation through additional analysis.

If a sample is initially positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are derived from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive screen results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analysis can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug exam is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can show a drug use pattern over a timeframe, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs typically require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses usually incur more costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Whiting, IA: Hair testing surpasses urine tests with its sharper detection abilities. While urine tests reveal recent drug use, hair tests cast a wider net, identifying usage over a longer timeframe, thus proving more reliable for employers.

The benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests include greater detection accuracy and reliability. The extended detection window captures a broader history of usage, offering a more comprehensive report than urine tests, which only show recent consumption.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Whiting, IA: Hair follicle testing provides an unparalleled advantage with its long detection window, covering up to 90 days of substance use. This broad scope gives employers a fuller understanding of an individual's drug history.

The detection span of hair follicle tests offers an extended timeframe, making it invaluable for employers seeking a thorough look into an applicant's or employee's substance use history, revealing any past behaviors that shorter-term tests miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
