Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ada, Kansas. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, providing services in all cities across the nation, including hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method in recent times. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over the traditional urine counterparts. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, assist courts, and aid probation requirements due to their extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and high cheating resistance. Despite this, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs through biomarkers captured within the hair strands. When the sample is taken from near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair might be utilized. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory system. This process involves validating that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive samples in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly low concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge to perform.

Verification of any affirmative screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as per requirement. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeline.
  • High resistance to tampering: It's exceedingly challenging to compromise a hair drug test, thereby delivering more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug usage patterns spanning a period, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug test methods.
  • Potential result variances: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
