In Aetna, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're searching for a reliable hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing and a network of testing centers throughout the nation make us your ideal choice. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options tailored to your needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has significantly increased. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary individuals due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. It ensures a more reliable observation process and is difficult to manipulate. For detecting very recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant technique for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we exclusively denote scalp hair. Body hair pertains to every other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial assimilation of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary test for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening require another confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the purpose of Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most complex method.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, rendering the results more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It displays a pattern of drug use over a duration, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing, available in Aetna, KS, surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and dependability. Unlike the standard urine test, hair tests can identify drug use over a more extended period, providing a more comprehensive history of substance usage. This thorough detection capability makes hair testing the preferred choice for employers, legal systems, and professionals addressing substance abuse.

The reliability of hair testing eliminates the uncertainty sometimes experienced with urine tests, which can be affected by recent usage and other variables. Employing a scientific approach, hair follicle tests provide a more detailed understanding of drug use history, ensuring precise and actionable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Aetna, KS, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, making it a powerful tool in assessing substance use. Unlike other testing methods, this test provides a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use over an extended period. Employers benefit from this long window by gaining in-depth insights into an applicant's past substance consumption habits.

This extended detection capacity allows employers to make informed decisions, reducing the chances of hiring someone with a history of neglecting workplace safety through drug use. It ensures a safe and compliant work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Aetna, KS, offer a tamper-resistant solution to drug testing challenges. This testing method significantly mitigates the risks associated with sample adulteration, delivering dependable and indisputable results. The nature of hair tests makes it nearly impossible for individuals to alter the outcome, guaranteeing authentic results for reliable decision-making processes.

Employers and legal authorities can trust hair follicle tests to provide a true picture of an individual's substance use, as this method leaves little room for manipulation. The integrity of the testing process is preserved, offering peace of mind and assurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
