Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Agricola, Kansas. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, they excel in this area, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed for testing. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing methods have been increasingly used for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation find it beneficial. The extended detection of drug use up to 90 days and secure collection minimize cheating risks. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair comprises all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to discard drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to ensure court admissibility. Samples that appear positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is exceedingly tough to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
