Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Akron, Kansas. If you require a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing ensures broad accessibility, with centers in various cities nationwide for conducting these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. These exams can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer it over conventional urine tests. Organizations with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation clients frequently adopt hair analysis. The key advantage lies in a prolonged detection frame, stretching up to 90 days, under an observed procedure, minimizing the chances of manipulation. Nevertheless, for detecting drugs consumed within the last five days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive timeline of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to about a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any additional data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it's a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more precise results.
  • Records past usage: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs usually become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Akron, KS, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine analysis in several ways. For one, it offers remarkably enhanced detection accuracy, identifying residual substances long after consumption, while urine tests are limited to recent use. This extended detection is vital for employers aiming for a true picture of sobriety over time.

The reliability of hair testing trumps that of urine tests, as samples are less prone to tampering or adulteration. Hair tests reliably expose consistent substance abuse, thus helping enforce stricter no-drug-use policies effectively, and distinguishing ongoing use from isolated incidents.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Akron, KS, provides a significant advantage due to its extended detection window. Unlike traditional tests, hair analysis can uncover drug consumption up to 90 days prior, giving a more holistic view of an individual's substance history. This is crucial for employers who wish to ensure a safe, drug-free workplace.

This long-range detection capability allows companies to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data. Hair tests' extensive window helps identify habitual users more effectively than short-term-focused alternatives, such as urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Akron, KS, excels because of its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other methods that can be easily manipulated, hair tests provide a secure way to validate substance use history, building confidence in the results.

This testing method significantly mitigates the risk of adulteration. Ensuring reliability means the results are indisputable, an assurance that employers and legal authorities value highly. The inherent resistance to tampering enhances trust in hair analyses.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
