Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Alma, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, we specialize in hair testing with centers available throughout the Nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices in most circumstances. Hair samples can be examined for substances, alcohol, or tailored testing needs.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased over recent times. More employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists are opting for hair analysis instead of the traditional urine test. This method is favored by companies with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on supervision. Its main advantage is a considerably extended detection period, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process, making it hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for usage within the last five days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the layers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. The sample should ideally be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. In reference to head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal stages in the laboratory procedure of drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory systems. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and entering any supplemental data absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening performs a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the collected sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

For Confirming any positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies are utilized. All presumptively positive samples are rinsed as necessary prior to Confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the guidelines of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: The likelihood of cheating on a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often carry a higher cost than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing undeniably surpasses urine testing in Alma, KS due to its superior detection accuracy. Hair analysis traces substance use over extended periods, offering reliable assessments compared to conventional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, which only capture recent usage, hair testing provides a comprehensive look at an individual's drug history, ensuring employers receive more accurate results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Alma, KS grants employers a detailed account of an individual's drug use over three months. With an extended detection window, this method provides a more comprehensive overview of an employee's or applicant’s substance history, as opposed to the limited scope of other tests. This extended period offers insights that are crucial for making informed hiring or employment-related decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Alma, KS, hair follicle tests present an almost foolproof method to prevent sample manipulation. The risk of adulteration is considerably minimized due to the robust testing processes involved. This reliability reassures employers that the results they obtain are authentic and untampered, bringing added confidence in ensuring workplace safety and compliance with company policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
