Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Almena, Kansas. Whether you require evaluation for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis, with facilities available across all urban areas nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. You can opt for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair analysis alternatives.

Recently, drug evaluation methods increasingly favor hair follicle analyses. Employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists often prefer this over standard urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal entities, and those under probation use it. Its primary advantage is a 90-day drug usage detection period, conducted under observation, making it tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain the top choice for screening drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When obtained near the scalp, the hair offers a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the analysis of a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the laboratory's system, which includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are separated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging to execute.

Confirmation of a positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with a presumptive positive status undergo cleaning before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for hair and certified to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can outline drug use patterns over time, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
