Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arma, Kansas. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers spanning all cities across the nation equipped for the task. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or elsewhere on the body is sufficient. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing approaches have seen a shift towards hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse professionals increasingly favor hair tests over the conventional urine tests. This method caters to those with stringent no-drug policies, including courts and probationary bodies, due to its extended detection capability of around 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that minimizes chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain most precise for usage within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a long-lasting record of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab procedure of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This encompasses ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entries omitted by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening consists of a primary rapid check for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical method to disregard drug use in the majority of instances; however, a positive screen needs ratification to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening do necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tentatively tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of substance use over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
