Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Aulne, Kansas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other custom testing solutions.

Drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now often opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. These tests are utilized by organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the ability to detect drug use over a period of up to 90 days, with observation during collection making it almost cheat-proof. However, for the most accurate results in the last five days, urine tests are preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected from near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing into the lab’s system, which involves verifying the sealed and correctly shipped sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further required data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick evaluation for substances of concern. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. All presumes positive samples in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspect in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify substance use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can provide a record of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier than alternate drug testing practices.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
