In Bel Aire, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are indispensable for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probationary conditions. The main advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observed conditions, making it exceptionally difficult to tamper with. On the other hand, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective instrument for identifying substance use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The four critical phases in the laboratory completion of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be accepted in judicial proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal substance use up to 90 days, versus urine tests with a briefer detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays usage history: It can show a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may affect drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
