In Belle Plaine, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing services. Catering to those in need of drug or alcohol analysis, they are experts in hair sample testing with facilities available in cities throughout the country. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, the tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide customized testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly been the method of choice for drug detection. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair over urine tests. Used by employers with strict drug-free mandates and judicial systems for probation monitoring, hair tests are preferred due to their extended detection time, usually up to 90 days, and their near-immunity to tampering. However, for detecting use within the last 5 days, urine tests still hold the spot for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair traps biomarkers within its growing fibers, thus providing a prolonged history of substance intake. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for a duration of up to three months. Such samples are straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

To obtain an ideal test sample, collect a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp, which yields 100mg of hair. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other hair categories (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process to determine a drug test result entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the entry of a specimen into the lab's operations, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that isn’t provided via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening functions as a preliminary evaluation for the presence of illicit drugs. It acts as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in the majority of cases; however, any positive screenings demand confirmation to achieve legal validity. Samples showing presumptive positive results must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be flagged as positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. The Extraction phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other kinds of testing (such as urine or saliva), hence making hair drug testing one of the more challenging methods.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples get pre-processed with cleanses as necessary before Confirmation. The full path from Accessioning to Confirmation is endorsed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Reduced manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Reflects historic usage: It provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing formats.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being named "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands and not the scalp-located follicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
