Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Belleville, Kansas. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing. We operate centers nationwide, ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, though body hair may also be used. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or utilize other specialist hair testing methods.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction for conducting assessments. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over urine analyses. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probationers often use hair tests. The main advantage lies in a longer detection window—up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can show a drug and alcohol detection period of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

By acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, one can obtain 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples that exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

A positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests offer a detection period of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug tests are exceedingly difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: These tests can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It requires roughly 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is preferred in Belleville, KS, for its advantages over traditional urine testing. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a broader detection range, not limited to recent use but spanning a three-month period. This allows for a comprehensive view of substance use, making hair testing highly reliable.

Employers and professionals value hair testing for the enhanced accuracy it provides. While urine tests are common, hair tests deliver a deeper insight, detecting substances that may have been missed, proving its superiority in various testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
