Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Beloit, Kansas. We are experts in hair drug and alcohol tests, with centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is necessary. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized analyses.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair tests over typical urine tests. Hair tests suit employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those under probation. The extended detection period of up to 90 days is a key advantage, gathered via an observed process, making it difficult to tamper. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers around a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is easy, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp provides 100mg, which is ideal for analysis. For extended tests such as EtG, add-ons, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, collect an equal amount of body hair. Here, head hair refers explicitly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other hair types.

Process Overview

The drug test outcome processing in the lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage where a sample gets incorporated into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in much finer concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, demonstrating why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS completes the Confirmation of any positive screening. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation if required. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Challenge to tamper: It's extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers usage pattern: It provides information on the pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become visible in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair tests often come at a higher cost than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Different factors, like hair color and growth rate variations, might influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being known as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
