Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers are nationwide and specialize in this service. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically required. Our tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet specific testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle testing for drug screening has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly select hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is preferred by employers with strict drug use policies and by legal systems. A key advantage is the extended detection period, which reaches up to 90 days. This method is hard to cheat and involves an observed process, though urine tests still provide unparalleled accuracy for drugs used within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs as biomarkers are encased in the strands of hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to ship.

An ideal sample for testing and verification consists of a 1.5-inch cluster of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing hair drug screening as a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It illustrates a trend in drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Bonner Springs, KS, the advantages become evident. Hair testing is superior due to its extended detection window and greater accuracy in identifying substances. This method is less vulnerable to tampering, making it a reliable choice for those seeking thorough drug use assessments.

Hair testing's non-invasive collection process and its ability to reveal a longer history of drug use makes it ideal for employers wishing to maintain a drug-free workplace. It overcomes the limitations of urine tests, which are often limited to detecting recent usage, and provides a more extensive overview of an individual's substance habits.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Bonner Springs, KS, stand out for their ability to detect drug use over a prolonged period—up to 90 days. This extended window allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee's substance history. The long detection period provides valuable insights into an individual's behavioral patterns.

Employers benefit from this extended detection period by being able to assess more than just recent drug use, offering a clearer picture of an applicant's history. This capability makes hair testing a preferred method for those needing thorough background checks that reflect long-term behaviors rather than short-term lapses.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bonner Springs, KS, hair follicle testing serves as a tamper-resistant method for detecting drug use. The difficulty of adulterating or substituting hair samples means that the results are trustworthy and credible. Hair tests provide definitive results and help to eliminate doubts about the authenticity of the sample provided.

Besides being nearly impossible to cheat, hair follicle tests involve a precise collection process. This accuracy in sample collection and testing ensures the results are based on verified and unaltered samples. Such dependability is crucial for legal cases, workplace assessments, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
