In Burden, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a drug or alcohol test via hair is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method, offering testing centers in cities across the country equipped for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown or body may be collected. We can assess hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing practices increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over the conventional urine testing. This method is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation due to its benefits. Key advantages include a detection window extending up to 90 days and collection under supervision, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it is capable of offering up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample being entered into the lab's system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Burden, KS, offers distinct advantages over urine testing. Its superior detection accuracy and reliability make it the preferred choice for many. Unlike traditional urine tests, it can reveal long-term drug use, ensuring a more comprehensive assessment.

Employers and professionals value this testing method for its extended detection period, which far surpasses that of urine tests. Hair follicle tests provide greater insight into an individual's substance use history, making them a more effective deterrent.

Extended Detection Window

In Burden, KS, hair follicle testing stands out with an extended detection window of up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive assessment of drug use over time. This extended tracking period helps employers gain deeper insight into an individual's history.

The long-term detection capability of hair follicle tests is unparalleled, allowing for a thorough evaluation without the short-term limitations present in other testing methods, empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
