Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing solutions in Burns, Kansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is backed by nationwide testing centers equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair samples can be scrutinized for alcohol/ETG, drugs, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the preferred method for drug testing has increasingly been the hair follicle test. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation services. The key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it highly tamper-resistant. Yet, for detection of drug use within the past 5 days, urine remains the more accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lengthy history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to ensure accurate weight. If scalp hair isn't accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This includes confirming the sample's secure sealing and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptively positive result, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed prior to necessary confirmation. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It delivers a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to choosing between hair follicle and urine tests in Burns, KS, the former offers superior accuracy. Its ability to detect a broader spectrum of substances sets it apart from traditional urine tests.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests provide a longer detection window, especially advantageous for those committed to enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Burns, KS, gain significant insight into an individual's drug use over the past 90 days through hair follicle testing, offering a comprehensive understanding of substance habits.

This extended detection period, unmatched by other methods, equips employers to make informed decisions regarding potential hires or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are renowned for their resistance to tampering, a crucial factor in maintaining the integrity of drug testing– a key concern in Burns, KS.

Their design substantially minimizes the possibility of sample adulteration, thus providing trustworthy and irrefutable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
