In Byers, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we offer nationwide testing centers in every city, ready to handle your hair testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, sourced from either the scalp or body. Our hair tests include options for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing requirements.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years, with many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts preferring them over standard urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, ensuring an accurate collection that's hard to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly valued as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. A sample collected near the scalp can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, remains comparatively challenging to tamper with, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, serving as the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or when testing exceeds 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair alone. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples presumed positive during Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), lending hair drug screening to be the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to adulterate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: It supplies a pattern of drug use across a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing options in Byers, KS, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests. The superior detection accuracy and reliability offered by hair testing give it the upper hand.

Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a longer detection window and are less easy to tamper with. These benefits make hair testing the preferred choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extensive detection window, hair follicle testing in Byers, KS, provides employers with a thorough overview of substance use, spanning up to 90 days.

This prolonged detection period grants companies a clearer understanding of an applicant or current employee's drug history, enabling better decision-making and fostering a safe workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Byers, KS, stands apart with its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests offer results that are highly resistant to sample adulteration.

This reliability assures that the outcomes of the tests are unquestionable, maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of the process for all concerned parties.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
