In Cedar, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair testing with centers nationwide, ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, the reliance on hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies and judicial and probationary bodies, hair tests offer a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, collected securely and hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair records a long-term history of exposure to alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. In terms of head hair, only scalp hair is considered. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This procedure involves confirming that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is an affordable way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage pattern: It can indicate a trend of drug use over time, and not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
