In Centerville, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. These assessments are available nationwide, in any city, and specialize in analyzing for drugs, alcohol, or customized testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, with alternatives available for those with less hair.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly used over traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. This method offers extended accuracy and a detection window of up to 90 days, thus making sample manipulation extremely difficult. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered a robust method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the cultivating hair strand. When taken nearest to the scalp, hair may provide a detection range of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, comparatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest assessing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair signifies all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab handling of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails checking that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides past usage data: It can indicate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Substances take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Divergence in findings: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually concerns the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
