In Clements, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether you're looking for hair drug or alcohol assessments, our company excels in hair testing, boasting a nationwide network of facilities. For accurate results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is usually required, though other body hair might also suffice. These tests cover various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for substance detection. Organizations such as employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer them over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are invaluable for employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial orders, and probation checks. Their advantage is an extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and offering little to no room for tampering. Conversely, for recent drug usage proof, a urine test is still considered the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has increasingly been acknowledged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, the hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to nearly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry needed beyond the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and efficient method to identify drug abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results from Screening require confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive result in screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than solely detecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing methods are typically more expensive compared to others.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

While both hair follicle and urine tests are valid methods of drug detection, hair follicle testing proves more reliable in Clements, KS. Its detection capabilities extend far beyond what urine tests can typically identify.

  • Longer detection periods,
  • Avoidance of single-event inaccuracies,
  • And difficulty to manipulate results
make hair testing a more efficient choice for comprehensive substance history evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window in Clements, KS. While urine tests generally provide a glimpse into recent usage, hair testing offers a detailed view up to 90 days of drug activity. This lengthier timeline ensures employers and legal systems gain a deeper understanding

  • Of a person's substance use patterns,
  • Allowing for informed decisions,
  • And robust background checks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing remarkably reduces tampering risks in Clements, KS. The testing method itself is designed to minimize potential adulteration. Advantages of this approach include:

  • The elimination of dilution attempts,
  • Consistent observation during sample collection,
  • And secure handling protocols.
Such measures ensure the integrity and authenticity of the results, providing trust for employers and individuals alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
