Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Colby, KS, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in conducting both hair drug and alcohol tests. Nationwide centers, including those in every city, are equipped for hair testing. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our tests are customizable and can assess drugs, ETG for alcohol, or other hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have surged in popularity for drug testing methods recently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests to standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation opt for hair testing. Key advantages include a longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal portion for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab system. This step includes verifying the sample's sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation on any positively screened result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus yielding more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing is Superior to Urine Testing in Colby, KS
Hair tests offer a more comprehensive detection window than standard urine tests, allowing analysis of up to 90 days. This provides a reliable overview of substance use compared to the shorter window urine tests offer.
Additionally, with its nearly impossible tamper-proof nature, hair testing ensures the integrity of results, distinguishing it from urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window: A Comprehensive View
Hair follicle testing in Colby, KS, offers a detection timeline of up to 90 days, giving a longer historical perspective on an employee's substance usage. This is significantly superior to other testing methods which provide only a short-term snapshot.
The extended window assists in a thorough assessment, perfect for understanding recurring or chronic substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Unparalleled Tamper Resistance in Testing
Hair follicle tests minimize tampering risks because samples are collected directly from the body, making substitution or adulteration very challenging.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
