Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Copeland, Kansas. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from the head or body. Our tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG among other specific hair analysis options.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a preferred method of drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance specialists often favor this over traditional urine tests. This method is favored due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, strict supervision during sample collection, and the difficulty in tampering results. However, for detecting substance use within a short window (5 days), urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, both drugs and alcohol. Hair strands, by encasing biomarkers during growth, offer a retrospective account of substance consumption over an extended period. When strands are gathered near the scalp, they can reveal a usage history spanning up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. This method is notable for its ease of collection, resistance to tampering, and straightforward shipping process.

A sample requiring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, suitable for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests like EtG, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. The specimen should ideally be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, body hair in equivalent measure may be utilized. The term head hair is specifically synonymous with scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any other required information not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a swift preliminary examination for prohibited substances. While it’s a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples identified as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid); hence, hair drug screening is recognized as one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation for any positive findings in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Altering or falsifying hair drug test results is highly challenging, enhancing their reliability.
  • Historical insight: The test can outline patterns of substance use over time, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to alternate testing forms.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth patterns may alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
