Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Danville, Kansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty in hair testing is supported by numerous centers across the Nationwide setup, ensuring accessibility everywhere. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or any body part may be necessary. Varied hair analysis options are available, including drug and alcohol/ETG testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence over traditional methods. This shift is echoed by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals leaning towards hair tests over urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies or those on probation find this method beneficial. The main advantage of hair testing is its ability to identify drug usage over a longer period, approximately 90 days, mitigating cheating risks. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can provide up to an approximate 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome includes these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This entails checking that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While being cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a complex process to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows.
  • Challenging to bypass: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: Provides a timeline of drug use across an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take between 5-7 days before they become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Danville, KS
Hair follicle testing provides substantial benefits over traditional urine tests. While urine testing identifies recent drug use, hair tests offer longer detection periods. In Danville, KS, many find hair tests more reliable for chronic substance use as they detect usage over several months instead of days.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests are less susceptible to tampering. Their higher accuracy provides peace of mind for employers and authorities, showcasing its superiority for monitoring substance abuse.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Danville, KS
One major advantage of hair follicle drug testing in Danville, KS is its extended detection window. Typical urine tests only capture recent drug use, whereas hair testing provides a comprehensive analysis over a 90-day period. This long-term view is invaluable for employers assessing potential new hires or monitoring current employees.

Employers can utilize this extended window to obtain a more detailed history of an individual's substance use, allowing for more informed decisions based on a longer timeline of behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
