Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Devon, Kansas. Specializing in hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our centers span Nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body hair is sufficient. These tests assess for substances, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have often incorporated hair follicle evaluations. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists favor these over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers, hair testing's key advantage is a wide, up-to-90-days detection window, performed in an observed environment, limiting the possibility of tampering. To detect recent, within-5-days usage, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the potential for tampering is low, and the sample is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially handling a sample within the laboratory's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional details absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary inspection for abuse substances. It’s an economical means to dismiss drug presence in most samples, but any positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives at the Screening stage must undergo further verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction, where drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis notably challenging.

Confirming any positive in Screening is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The comprehensive workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the standards of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Provides insights into drug consumption over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
