Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Doniphan, Kansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, with facilities available citywide across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body may be employed. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer alternative specialized hair testing solutions.

Recently, the urinary drug screening method has been increasingly supplanted by hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now prefer hair exams over traditional urine analyses. Employers who uphold stringent no-drug mandates, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation utilize hair tests. The predominant advantage is a prolonged detection timeframe of up to 90 days, secured through supervised sample collection, rendering tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for drug-use screening within the last five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical archive of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When addressing head hair, we refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported appropriately, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to discount drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation before it is permissible in legal contexts. Samples indicated as positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

If a sample indicates positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The overall laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection window: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably difficult to falsify a hair drug examination, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use across a timeline, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest detectable levels in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variability factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Doniphan, KS Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior accuracy and reliability. The extended detection window captures a larger spectrum of drug use over time, which urine tests often miss. This ensures a more complete and trustworthy overview of an individual's substance history, invaluable to those prioritizing comprehensive analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Doniphan, KS Utilizing hair follicle testing unlocks the advantage of a prolonged detection span, reaching up to 90 days, to reveal drug use occurrences. This span allows employers a thorough inspection into an applicant's or employee's history, providing a broad perspective well beyond the capability of standard urine tests. This aids in making informed hiring and monitoring choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
