Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle substance testing in Dresden, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, they specialize in hair testing with centers located in all major cities Nationwide, ready to perform exam. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. Tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified hair test requests.

Hair follicle drug testing has risen in popularity in recent years. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate these tests instead of common urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance drug policy employers, legal systems, and probationers, hair testing offers prolonged detection of drug use up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is hard to deceive, although for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advised to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair could be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although screening is a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive screening samples necessitate further confirmation.

If a screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
