Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Dunlap, Kansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a network of testing facilities spread nationwide, ready to conduct your test. Typically, a hair length between 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle assessments. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Particularly favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, hair follicle tests are also used in court and probationary contexts. Their main advantage is a more extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner and difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more dependable for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can demonstrate a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken at the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We advise weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating the sample into the laboratory's system. This process confirms the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Although cost-effective in ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in a legal context. All samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction step. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which register a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over a lengthy timeframe rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities in Dunlap, KS. This method excels by identifying usage over a substantially longer period, reducing the likelihood of errors and false negatives compared to urine tests.

While traditional urine tests are common, hair testing in Dunlap, KS, offers a more comprehensive insight into substance use history, paving the way for robust and reliable screening processes.

Extended Detection Window

In Dunlap, KS, hair follicle testing provides an extended window for detecting drug usage, covering up to 90 days. This broadened detection span grants employers a detailed view of an individual's drug use, surpassing the capabilities of conventional testing methods.

Employers focusing on long-term patterns find hair testing invaluable in identifying consistent usage trends, thereby enabling more informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Dunlap, KS, offer a tamper-resistant solution that minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods, altering a hair sample is exceedingly difficult, assuring reliable and unquestionable outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
