Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Edwardsville, Kansas. For hair or alcohol drug assessments, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers Nationwide equipped for hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug exams. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with no-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals use these tests. A major advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, performed under observation, making it hard to tamper. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use in 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection span for substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be used. In this context, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial incorporation into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes verifying the sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most samples, a court-admissible positive result must be validated. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need corroboration.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lesser concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The thorough laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a record of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable within hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Edwardsville, KS

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering a superior detection timeframe. While urine tests screen for recent drug use only, hair tests provide insights over an extended period, catching patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. This precision helps employers make informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

Urine tests might miss some substances due to their shorter detection windows, whereas hair follicle tests capture long-term substance use. With nearly foolproof accuracy, hair tests discourage false negatives and enhance reliability, important for environments needing stringent drug-use policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Edwardsville, KS

The extended detection capabilities of hair follicle tests make them indispensable for employers in need of thorough substance use histories. These tests can identify drug intake from up to 90 days prior, offering a sweeping overview of an individual's behavior. This advantage is particularly beneficial in industries aiming for zero-tolerance policies.

Employers stand to gain from insights on patterns rather than transient occurrences. A longer detection window means that there is a lessened chance of missing habitual use. Employers can confidently uphold their hiring standards by obtaining a wider view of potential employees' habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Edwardsville, KS

Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the chance of sample adulteration, which is a notable benefit over other testing methods. The complex structure of hair makes altering the test results almost impossible. This ensures the test outcomes are dependable and conclusive, supporting accurate assessments of personal and professional histories.

In drug testing scenarios, integrity is paramount, and hair tests fortify this through resistance to tampering. This mode of testing guarantees the results remain uncorrupted, strengthening the data's credibility for decisive evaluations, whether in legal, corporate, or personal contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
