Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Elbing, Kansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing and have facilities across every city nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or, alternatively, body hair may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing protocols.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly integrated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair drug testing as an alternative to typical urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. A critical advantage of these tests is their prolonged window of detection, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, and the difficulty of false results. However, for detecting recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly three-month detection period for substances. The collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample composed of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample within a lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows possible positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternatives (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected of being positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Gives historical insight: It can map a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elbing, KS, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering a longer detection window and more reliable results. Hair tests detect drug use over a 90-day period, vastly improving on the shorter detection capabilities of urine tests. This makes hair testing a superior option for employers and legal entities seeking comprehensive substance use histories.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection is a hallmark of hair follicle testing in Elbing, KS, giving employers a broad view of drug use over time. By capturing substance use within a 90-day period, this testing method allows organizations to understand an employee's or candidate's true drug use history, ensuring informed decisions based on detailed substance use data.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are tamper-resistant, offering Elbing, KS, reliable drug testing results with lower risks of sample tampering. The nature of the collection process and the properties of hair samples significantly reduce the likelihood of adulteration, thereby securing trustworthy findings for employers and other stakeholders.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
