Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Elgin, Kansas. When requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this method, with facilities in numerous cities Nationwide equipped to administer such tests. Typically, a sample ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed, and it can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Over recent times, the frequency of utilizing hair follicle tests for drug analysis has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by workplaces with stringent anti-drug regulations, judiciary systems, and probation cases. The main advantage is their ability to detect drug usage over a prolonged duration, up to 90 days, with a witnessing process during collection, and the near impossibility of falsification. Yet, for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent portion of body hair might be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Despite Screening being an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result precision.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over some time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Elgin, KS, is superior compared to traditional urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy. Hair testing can identify substances used up to 90 days ago, whereas urine tests typically only detect recent usage. Moreover, hair testing's reliability reduces the chances of erroneous results, positioning it as a premier choice for individuals and organizations seeking thoroughness and accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Elgin, KS benefits from hair follicle testing's extended detection window, which can trace substance use up to 90 days. This longevity offers employers a detailed insight into an individual's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
