At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Enterprise, Kansas. For those in need of drug or alcohol tests via hair samples, we specialize in this method and provide testing centers across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for accurate analysis. Hair samples can be tested for a range of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, with customized testing options available.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has seen increased adoption in recent years. Employers, court systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse are now more frequently opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored among those with stringent no-drug policies, as well as the judiciary and probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that drastically reduces the potential for tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use over an approximate three-month period. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Here, head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in analyzing a drug test at the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is processed into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample’s integrity during sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data required that's not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. Although it is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive finding is necessary for legal proceedings. Samples that test positive at the Screening stage warrant further confirmation.

Presumptive positives at the Screening stage prompt more hair to be extracted from the initial sample for subsequent Extraction. During Extraction, drug concentrations in hair are identified at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which are why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Resistant to deception: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug, rendering results more reliable.
  • Chronological insights: It depicts a timeline of drug usage over months, rather than only recent consumption.

Restrictions:

  • Limited for recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing is Superior In Enterprise, KS, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One of the primary benefits is its superior accuracy in detecting long-term drug use. While urine tests may miss certain substances after a short window, hair tests provide a comprehensive 90-day detection period.

Additionally, the reliability of hair testing minimizes the risk of false negatives or manipulation, making it a preferred choice for many local employers. The extended detection and reliability of hair tests enhance compliance with workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

An Extended Detection Window Up to 90 Days Hair follicle testing in Enterprise, KS, provides a detailed view of an individual's drug use history, effectively spanning up to 90 days. This extended detection window is invaluable for employers seeking a thorough understanding of a candidate or employee's substance use patterns.

By offering a longer detection period, hair tests ensure that both chronic and occasional drug uses are identified, granting a more comprehensive assessment compared to standard testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Reducing Sample Adulteration Risks In Enterprise, KS, hair follicle tests stand out due to their resistance to tampering. Unlike urine samples, which can be manipulated, hair specimens significantly diminish the opportunity for adulteration, thus ensuring trustworthy and indisputable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
