Based in Fairport, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle testing for substances. Specializing in this method, we have numerous Nationwide centers ready to accommodate your needs. Hair samples typically require 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other specialized hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug detection, being favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance policies utilize it to maintain compliance. A significant advantage of this type of testing is its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, which is monitored under observation, making it highly tamper-proof. For substance use detected within 5 days, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronic record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for preliminary testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. In relation to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab is divided into four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipment of the sample, the allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of additional data entry absent in electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be legally credible. Samples that yield presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at substantially lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

For confirming any positive screening outcomes, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples presuming positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Prominent Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug screening can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine screenings with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug screenings are very difficult to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies usage history: Establishes a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, rather than solely reflecting recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It roughly takes between 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically more costly than alternative drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
