Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests right in Farlington, Kansas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist. We have centers in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. Our hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Lately, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased in drug testing procedures. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers use these tests due to their benefits, such as extended detection periods of up to 90 days, and an observed collection process that makes tampering almost impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history by securing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol activity over a period of up to about three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness), provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and validation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be obtained. Here, head hair denotes only scalp hair, whilst body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where the sample is entered into the lab system. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective in excluding drug use for the majority of samples, results from Screening must be verified for court acceptability. Samples with presumed positive screenings require further affirmation.

For samples suspected to be positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to confirm any preliminary positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a trend of drug consumption over a timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drug detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Typically referred to as "hair follicle tests," this assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
