In Floral, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, we offer expertise and numerous testing centers across the nation. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown or other body parts, and can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific purposes.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has surged, often being preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the conventional urine test. Entities favor hair tests due to stringent drug use policies and its use among probationary individuals. The test's significant advantage lies in its extended detection timeline, capturing drug use up to 90 days, and involves an observed collection process that's highly resistant to tampering, although for very recent drug use—up to 5 days—a urine test remains highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a comprehensive view of alcohol and drug usage by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Hair samples, when collected near the scalp, can offer an approximate three-month detection period for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), is required, which yields 100mg of hair, considered optimal for both screening and confirmation. For more extensive tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equal quantity of body hair may be considered. References to head hair are specifically about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test entail Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an expedited preliminary check for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, confirmed positive results are necessary for courtroom validity. Samples indicative of positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction process. This stage removes drugs from hair at much lesser concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing as required before Confirmation. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine testing.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are almost impossible to falsify, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days post-consumption are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, not the scalp follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
